Counties across the country are ranked in classes, according to population. A First Class County, for example, has a population of at least 700,000. Utah only has one of those – Salt Lake County. Four counties in Utah are within the Second Class category. There are four other classifications recognized in Utah. These classifications are more than just numbers, they are often times are used to identify counties affected by specific State and Federal legislation and funding. Thus, each designation is carefully considered when making decisions that affect the counties.
