What's Coming This Week 2010-02-01 17:34:58

Thanks to all the county officials that made Friday's County Officials Day at the Legislature a success. We had great participation with nearly 200 county officials and Legislators participating. Once again, kudos to Doug Perry who always seems to pull off a great party.

Trying to project a week out at the Legislature is always a risky proposition (things change up here minute to minute), nevertheless, here's what county officials might want to look forward to this week:

  • The Joint Health and Human Services Appropriation Subcommittee is meeting this afternoon and will be hearing from the Utah Association of Counties (as well as a number of other entities) on Health and Human Service delivery. Interested county officials will find the meeting in Room 30 of the House Building in the State Capitol Complex (located on the west side of the complex). UAC's presentation is scheduled to start at 4:25 and run until 4:50 PM.

  • The Executive Offices and Criminal Justice Appropriations Subcommittee will be discussing jail contracting at its Wednesday afternoon meeting starting at 2:00 PM in room 220 of the State Capitol. County commissioners from counties which contract with the state to house state prisoners in their county jails will want to participate.

  • Still no word on when HB 48 (the bill repealing the restaurant tax) might be heard, but just in case, clear Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 PM and Friday morning at 8:00 AM on your schedule as those are the dates and times that the House Revenue and Taxation Standing Committee is scheduled to meet this week. Agendas are required to be posted 24 hours in advance, so we might know as early as this afternoon when the bill will be heard.

  • Finally, Thursday is the last day to number bills (without special permission). That means that come Friday morning, we should have a sense of what we might be in store for the rest of the Legislative Session. Most of the bills that will be numbered Thursday night will not include anything but a short title and often those titles are frustratingly vague. Still seeing that much helps.
