This afternoon, SB 203 failed in the Senate with a
vote of 9 to 14 with 6 absent. This is the bill that would have changed the process to replace vacancies in
elected county offices by giving the political parties complete say in the filling of those vacancies.
A lot of county officials took time to meet their Senators and others to express their concerns with this bill.
If you made contact with Legislators, please take a moment to look over the vote and thank those Senators
who voted against the bill.
I believe the sponsor's desire with this bill was to match the counties' process with the process which is in
place to fill vacancies in the legislature. But, the job of a Legislator is vastly different from that of a
county elected official. I'm glad enough Legislators recognized that fact today.
